The Atlas of Worlds is Path of Exile's end-game map system. The Atlas is a series of linked maps that players can progress through after completing a quest for Officer Kirac.
Overview
The Atlas of Worlds is a visualization of the dream worlds that are opened by activating maps, indicating how these worlds are linked. The player starts at one of four starting maps in the center of the Atlas. These tier 1 maps start dropping on Act 8. Players can find new maps in adjacent, connected maps in the Atlas.
Map drops are not completely random; instead, a specific tier is chosen first and the map type is chosen from a pool of maps completed for that tier or connected to the map the character is currently in. [1]
Only connected maps and maps previously completed can drop from a map area. In addition to these rules, this map drop pool only consists of maps that are currently visible on the Atlas meaning maps that are removed from changing Watchstones are removed from the drop pool. There are a couple exceptions: During Zana's missions where you can obtain maps without restrictions from your Atlas progression, unique maps which can also drop their base type, and various league content that may drop maps.
Following this, when a map drop's tier is rolled and no maps of that tier currently exist on the atlas, a map isn't dropped but instead adds to a "map equity" system that helps higher tier maps to drop. [2]
Region
The Atlas is split into 8 different regions, each affecting a Watchstone or Conqueror's area of influence and what item bases can drop.
The 8 regions are:
- Glennach Cairns
- Haewark Hamlet
- Lex Ejoris
- Lex Proxima
- Lira Arthain
- New Vastir
- Tirn's End
- Valdo's Rest
Atlas Completion Bonus
For each map completed under certain conditions, you gain an Atlas completion Bonus. Each Bonus adds a 1% chance for a map to drop one tier higher, with each 100% chance automatically upgrading the tier of the dropped map. The maximum map tier, however, cannot bypass drop restrictions, even if it would have been upgraded[3].
For example, a rare monster in a tier 6 map with 125% completion bonus:
- a rare monster can drop tier +1 maps, as such it can drop tier 1 to 7 maps
- it will only drop maps that are adjacent or already unlocked (completed) on the atlas
- a tier 5 drop would be upgraded to tier 6, with a 25% chance to be upgraded to tier 7
- a tier 6 drop would be upgraded to tier 7, but can't be upgraded any further
- a tier 7 drop is already the highest possible drop, and can't be upgraded any further
The following maps do not count towards Atlas completion:

Awakening Level
The Awakening Level of your Atlas is the number of Watchstones you have socketed, divided by 4, and rounded down.
Awakening Levels increase the difficulty of all maps, but grant bonuses to item drops. It also enables Awakened Atlas completion bonuses at higher levels, granting further bonuses to map drops.
Each Awakening Level adds the following:
- Unique Map Boss has 3% more Life
- +1% chance for an additional connected Map to drop from Unique Map Boss
- +0.5% chance for a Shaper Guardian Map to drop from Unique Map Boss (Tier 14+)
- +0.5% chance for an Elder Guardian Map to drop from Unique Map Boss (Tier 14+)
- +1% chance for an additional Unique Item to drop from Unique Map Boss
- +1% chance for additional Map Currency Item to drop from Unique Map Boss
- Increased chance per Awakening Level for the Conquerors of the Atlas to drop additional rewards
- 5% increased chance for Influenced Items to drop in Maps influenced by the Conquerors of the Atlas
Awakening Completion Bonus
Awakened Atlas completion bonuses are acquired by completing the map at a certain Awakening Level or higher. In order to complete an Awakening Bonus Objective, it is merely required to finish the map at it's maximum tier while it is influenced by four Watchstones, while the Awakening Level requirement is met. Rarity or corruption of the map is irrelevant.
- 1% increased effect of Modifiers on non-unique Maps (per 6 Awakening Bonus)
- 1% chance to gain an Atlas Mission upon map completion (per 15 Awakening Bonus)
Atlas Mission
Each time you complete a map, there is a chance to receive an Atlas Mission for a random master. You can use Atlas Missions to guarantee a master to spawn in your next non-unique map. Your Atlas Mission counters are tracked for each set of map tier colours: white, yellow, and red; which one you receive is the same as the tier colour of the map you received it in. Your accumulated number of Atlas Missions can be seen in the Atlas layout screen. There is no limit to how many Atlas Missions you can store. You can redeem an Atlas mission by speaking to a master then running the map from that screen.
Once per day, when you log in, you will receive one Atlas missions for each master for the tier relative to the last map you've completed (-1/+1 range). Free Atlas missions refresh at midnight UTC.
Spawning Conquerors
Specify the reason an update is needed using |reason=
.
The new end-game Atlas quest introduced in Conquerors of the Atlas requires the player to track down and defeat different Conquerors in order to fight the end-game boss The Awakener. The first step in spawning the 4 Conquerors is to reach the 4 corners of the Atlas. In this process, you may discover Zana as well as different Conquerors' Citadels (which contain Watchstones Altars).
Players have to run 3 different maps from the same corner to spawn their first Conqueror. By this method, the lowest level encounters of Al-Hezmin, the Hunter, Veritania, the Redeemer, Drox, the Warlord and Baran, the Crusader can be spawned without acquiring any Watchstones.
The second to fifth encounters of the same Conqueror require the player to upgrade a region of the Atlas. Players need to discover the Altar (if applicable) of that region and insert a minimum number of Watchstone(s) in it. Typically, the second encounter requires 1 Stone, the third requires 2 Stones, the fourth requires 3 Stones and the fifth requires 4 Stones inserted into the Watchstones Altars. Inserting Watchstones also increase the map Tier of that region.
Before the first encounter with the Awakener, a Conqueror is guaranteed to spawn if you have met:
- Number of Watchstones requirement
- Running a map of tier equal to or higher than[citation needed] the current tier of that map on the Atlas (for example, with 1 Watchstone in Glennach Cairns, a Beach map would need to be at least tier 4 to trigger the Conqueror).
If both conditions (1) and (2) are met, the Conqueror will spawn. Killing the Conqueror for the 4th time (in 4 different regions) will acquire the 4th Watchstone of that Conqueror.
For spawning and beating a Conqueror the fifth time and beyond, it is required to insert 4 Watchstones into a region and meet the Conqueror 3 times before spawning the final arena.
Each Conqueror can have one available Citadel on the Atlas at the same time. Meaning, leaving a Citadel map for later will not prevent you from discovering Citadels from other Conquerors if they don't have one yet.
Optimizing Watchstone drops
Atlas progression can be divided into two parts: Pre-Awakener fight and Post-Awakener fight.
The Awakener fight will first be available upon obtaining 20 Wachstones and completing each Conquerors questline. During this time the Atlas must be progressively upgraded with the obtained Watchstones in order to reach the required region level for another Conqueror to spawn.
Post-Awakener, after the questline is completed and the Conquerors begin spawning randomly, you will be able to obtain the remaining 12 Wachstones from whichever regions still have unobtained ones. Each Conqueror can be defeated exactly once on the Atlas and upon defeating all four Zana will offer another Awakener fight. Having her open the portals to the fight resets the cycle and the Conquerors will be able to spawn once more. Actually fighting the Awakener is not necessary. However, to ensure this progress goes smoothly, it is important to keep a few things in mind.
When a random Conqueror encounter is triggered and a region is influenced, the game will spawn a Conqueror that has yet to drop the Watchstone for that regions, if available[4]. Only one set of Watchstones can be obtained in any region of the Atlas and each Conqueror can only influence one regions each cycle. But this can lead to a number of undesirable scenarios where a Conqueror cannot drop a Watchstone after being defeated. The following are a couple of broad examples where a Watchstone would fail to drop after defeating a Conqueror.
- If you are triggering a Conqueror encounter in a region where you are only missing the Cobalt WatchstoneCobalt WatchstoneThe memories and emotions of countless victims of the Elder,
locked in stone for eternity.Socket this into a Citadel on your Atlas to increase the Tier of Maps and reveal hidden Maps in that Citadel's Region. You can only socket one Crimson, Viridian, Cobalt or Golden Watchstone into each Citadel. but Veritania, the Redeemer, who drops the Cobalt Watchstone, is already influencing another region of the Atlas, you will get one of the remaining free Conquerors as an encounter.
- If a Conqueror encounter is triggered in a region where all Watchstones were already obtained.
- One region has the yellow and blue Watchstones unobtained and another one only the yellow one, otherwise no influences on the Atlas. If you first trigger a Conqueror encounter in the former region and get yellow influence instead of blue, then you cannot spawn the right Conqueror in the second region. In such a case it would be better to first trigger a Conqueror encounter in the latter region, forcing yellow influence, and then the first, which would then pick the only remaining blue influence.
- If, after resetting the cycle with an Awakener fight, one blue Watchstone was already claimed from a region by defeating the respective Conqueror no other blue influence can be triggered during that cycle. In regions with an unobtained blue Watchstone, a different influence would be triggered. So only one Wachstone from each color can be obtained during each cycle.
In order to get all Watchstones as quickly as possible and not waste any encounter-cycles, it is therefore advisable to:
- Prioritize running maps in regions that have the most unobtained Watchstones remaining to trigger Conqueror encounters.
- Pay attention to how many Watchstones the regions Citadel needs to have socketed, in order to spawn a Conqueror.
- Only run maps that match the regions current map-tier in order to trigger the first encounter. After a region is influenced lower tiers will suffice.[confirmation needed because of 3.10 changes]
- Pre-Awakener: Obtain Watchstones equally from all regions. Ideally, this would mean that by the time of the first Awakener encounter, after obtaining 20 Watchstones, four regions have 2 and four regions have 3 obtained Watchstones.
- ALTERNATIVELY Pre-Awakener: A straightforward approach would be to only run maps in one region, forcing Conqueror encounters only there and one after another, until all the regions Watchstones are obtained and then moving on to the next. This works in the beginning as the requirements for socketed Watchstones only rise slowly. The atlas completion bonus, which nets higher-tiered map returns, will also rise more slowly though.
- Post-Awakener: At the beginning of each cycle, after an Awakener fight, plan ahead which Conqueror you can encounter where. If possible make sure every Conqueror has a region to go to where the respective Watchstone is still unobtained.
- Post-Awakener: Try to obtain 3 Watchstones from each region before going for each fourth and therefore the last one.
Currency
- Sextants are used on Watchstones to add a special modifier to all the maps on the region where the Watchstone is socketed. Sextants last for 3 maps, and multiple Watchstones with sextant modifiers can stack.[1]
End of league transfer
When the current league ends the progress on the Atlas of Worlds is transferred to the relevant parent league. The parent league is generally Standard or Hardcore.
The merge has the following rules:[5]
- Maps or bonus objectives completed transferred to the parent league
- Sextant mods:
- They will be moved to the parent league; if the map already has a mod, the parent league mods will be kept
- Legacy modifiers continue to exist and work as long they have not been overridden
Atlas exclusive base items
This is a list of base item types that are considered end-game only base types. These items cannot be found in the acts, and are rarer than the default base types.
